Chaat Recipe
Chaat is a popular Indian street food known for its tangy, spicy, and sweet flavors. It's a versatile dish that can be made with various ingredients, but here's a classic version: Aloo Chaat (Potato Chaat).
Ingredients
For the Chaat Base:
Potatoes – 4 medium, boiled, peeled, and cubed
Oil or ghee – 2 tbsp (for frying or roasting)
Salt – to taste
For the Toppings:
Green chutney – 2-3 tbsp (made with coriander, mint, green chilies, and lemon juice)
Tamarind chutney – 2-3 tbsp
Yogurt – 1/2 cup (whisked)
Sev (crispy chickpea noodles) – 1/2 cup
Pomegranate seeds – 2 tbsp (optional)
Chopped onions – 1/4 cup
Chopped coriander leaves – 2 tbsp
Spices:
Chaat masala – 1 tsp
Roasted cumin powder – 1/2 tsp
Red chili powder – 1/4 tsp
Black salt – to taste
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes
1. Heat oil or ghee in a pan. Add the boiled and cubed potatoes.
2. Sprinkle salt and sauté until they turn golden and crispy. Remove from heat and let them cool slightly.
Step 2: Assemble the Chaat
1. Arrange the crispy potatoes on a serving plate.
2. Drizzle green chutney and tamarind chutney over the potatoes.
3. Add whisked yogurt for a creamy texture.
Step 3: Add Toppings and Spices
1. Sprinkle chaat masala, roasted cumin powder, red chili powder, and black salt evenly over the dish.
2. Top with chopped onions, pomegranate seeds, and sev for crunch.
3. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
Serving Suggestion
Serve Aloo Chaat immediately to enjoy its crispy texture and vibrant flavors. You can also pair it with papdis (crispy flatbreads) or as a side dish for an Indian meal.
Variations:
Dahi Papdi Chaat: Add crushed papdis and increase yogurt quantity.
Fruit Chaat: Replace potatoes with mixed fruits like apples, bananas, and grapes.
Bhel Puri: Add puffed rice and chopped tomatoes for a light and crunchy snack.
